We’ll admit, there’s much more to Fort William than simply bagging Ben Nevis – although climbing the tallest mountain in the UK is, of course, quite a feat. Think pubs that stock the finest Scotch whisky, daredevil mountain biking that attracts World Cup aficionados each year, loch-side wanders and even trips aboard the steam train that took Harry to Hogwarts. It really is quite a town. Wherever you go in Fort ‘Bill’, you’ll be in the shadow of the gigantic Ben Nevis, which measures a lofty 1,345 m. The mountain track is easily accessed from the visitor centre in nearby Glen Nevis, with the ascent taking 8 hours on average. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains and Lochaber. But remember, when it comes to climbing any of Scotland’s Munros, safety comes first – seek helpful advice and check the forecast before you go! You might not be surprised to hear that Fort William is the ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’. Do you prefer gentle fishing and quiet country walks, or skiing down stunning slopes and navigating white water rapids? Anything is possible, just remember to plan in advance and prepare for all types of weather. After a day’s escapades, you can put your feet up in a cosy traditional pub and enjoy a distinctly flavoured Highland single malt or what about a traditional ale straight from the local brewery? You can also indulge in the local delicacies at shops, cafés and restaurants along the High Street.
